Choose an unmanaged switch when you need a small, low-power, plug-and-play drop-in at an edge node with no configuration - you connect it and it forwards traffic. Choose a managed switch when the device has to fit into a configured network architecture, with VLANs, traffic prioritization (QoS), redundant ring recovery, and remote management over Web, CLI, or Telnet. The line includes both, so match the choice to whether your network is configured or flat.
The line spans Fast Ethernet and triple-speed (10/100/1000) copper switches, high-density gigabit fiber-optic switches, and PoE+ models that power connected devices over the same cable. Port counts range from a handful up to 24, so the driver is your I/O count and whether you need copper, fiber, or power delivery. If you're powering cameras, radios, or access points, the PoE variants supply a shared power budget across ports rather than requiring a separate supply.
Connectors vary by model family - compact units use SCE2 circular connectors, ruggedized units use D38999 circular connectors, and fiber models use dedicated fiber connectors, with several plating and keying options on some parts. Every datasheet lists the connector part numbers and includes mechanical drawings. The switches are designed to meet MIL-STD-461 (EMI/EMC), MIL-STD-810 (shock, vibration, temperature, humidity, immersion), and MIL-STD-1275/704 (power), with IP67 or IP68 ingress protection depending on the model. Compliance is by design, and formal qualification test reports are available on request - so ask for the specific reports your program requires rather than assuming which tests have been formally run
The switches are built around SWaP-C, using machined aluminium enclosures with passive, conductive cooling and no moving parts, so there are no fans to fail in a sealed installation. Sizes and weights range from palm-sized, sub-150 g units up to larger multi-kilogram chassis, and all mount to a flat surface. Power draw is low and runs off standard vehicle/aircraft DC buses, confirm the exact input voltage range and mounting pattern against the datasheet for the part you're considering.
Core managed features - VLANs, QoS, RSTP/MSTP ring recovery, link aggregation, port security - are standard on the managed models. Advanced features such as G.8032 ring protection, port protection schemes, and 1588v2 precise timing are typically unlocked in an "Enhanced" part number rather than the base one.
